Madison, Kelly and Tanner bake Jelly Boats, a family hand-me-down recipe.

Jelly Boat Recipe
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup shortening
1-4 tablespoons cold water as needed
1 jar (8 ounces) jelly or jam, any flavor

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Mix above ingredients, cover and chill at least one hour.
Roll out chilled dough on a floured board to 1/8 inch thickness.
Cut dough into 3 by 3 inch squares.
Rub chilled water on two parallel edges of each square and pinch ends together, leaving the center open, creating a pocket or boat for the jelly.
Place the boats on an ungreased baking sheet.
Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the boats are golden brown.
Let cool and fill with jelly and serve.  Yummy!
Recipe makes at least two dozen Jelly Boats.

Hey Kids,

When I was seven I wanted to be a super model, but then when I was ten,  I decided I wanted to be a writer.  If you want to write, here are a few suggestions: 1) Don't let anyone tell you your ideas stink.  2) Read lots.  3) Write lots.  4)Make sure you understand the words you read.  If you don't understand a word ask a smart person what the words mean or better yet, look up the words in a dictionary.  Don't be afraid of dictionaries.  They're not that bad.

Dictionary
a poem by Heide P. Boyden

There's a book upon my shelf
That looks so big and hairy.
But when I open it on up
It's really not that scary.
Any word I want to learn like "mummy" and "contrary"
are written on the pages of
my gnarly dictionary.

Heide's Story "A Different Seed" appeared in AIM (America's Intercultural Magazine).  The story is all about accepting little plants (and little people) who are different.

"If I'm not a radish, or a corn, or a bean, or a broccoli, or a zucchini, what am I?" asked Little Seed.

"You're different," said the bee.
